A combination of ritual and mythical elements as well as avant-garde art practices from the 70s and 80s:
Ensemble Studio Dan performs with Jalalu-Kalvert Nelson his compositions and those of Meredith Monk.

Anyone who has crossed paths with Jalalu-Kalvert Nelson will never forget the warmth and sincerity of the great heart that greets you. The composer and trumpeter, who grew up in Oklahoma and now resides in Switzerl and, seems to possess an endless wellspring of energy — energy he channels into chamber music, theater scores, performances, and countless stories. Whether Meredith Monk exhibits the same openness and warmth, we cannot say. But what is certain is that she, especially as a dynamic performer of her own works and also as a composer, fuses ritual and mythical elements with practices of avant-garde art from 1970s and 1980s New York — a point of connection between the two featured artists.

Nuclear fusion births a star. The star births an island. The island rises from a volcanic ocean; a microbial ecosystem of lichen and liquid flourishes into landscaped gardens of creeping flora. Cicadas awaken from deep sleep to sing and dance carrying molecular messages reverberating from species to species in symbiotic swirling cadence. Inside an amphibious body, a chemical reaction generates a satellite dish that chatters back into the cosmos.

JUSQU’À LA VICTOIRE – Godard on Methods of Thought and Action in the Palestinian Liberation Movement

In 1969, Jean-Luc Godard and Jean-Pierre Gorin, working under the name The Dziga Vertov Group, began developing a film documenting the Palestinian struggle. During this process, they traveled to Amman to gather footage that would later form the basis of Ici et Ailleurs, eventually released six years later.

Together, we will watch and discuss the film, alongside a text originally published without a title in El Fatah (July 1970), and later translated and printed in Free Palestine (January 1971).
